Mariners bag first win

The Mariners recorded the first win of the 2012/ 13 Season this afternoon with an emphatic 4-1 win against promotion hopefuls Mansfield Town.

A brilliant strike by Frankie Artus gave the Mariners the lead on 34 minutes. There was some good work down the right by Cook and Colbeck with Colbeck’s pull back finding Niven who in turn set up Artus on the edge of the box. The Town midfielder spun and clipped the ball past Marriot in the Stag’s goal.

On 44 minutes Aswad Thomas was tripped in the box and the referee pointed to the spot. Greg Pearson stepped up and sent Marriot the wrong way to double Town’s advantage.

Joe Colbeck slammed home his first goal for the Mariners and Town’s third of the game on the hour.

On 75 minutes Greg Pearson scored his second goal of the game and the Mariners’ fourth. From a Frankie Artus corner on the left, Pearson got in front of his marker to head backwards into the far corner of the net.

The Mariners blotted their copy book a little on 85 minutes when Rhead was allowed to steal in and pull one back for the Stags.

To add insult to injury Mansfield's Gary Roberts was dismissed for a second bookable offence seven minutes from time.
