JAMIE Clarke has signed a new deal with the Mariners, keeping him at Blundell Park for at least another season.

Mike Newell sees the former Boston, Rochdale and Mansfield Town utility man as a valuable squad player and has given him a one-year deal.

"It's nice to get things tied up and I can now have a few weeks to re-charge the batteries," Clarke said.

"I'm going to go on holiday now and then start thinking about next season.

"Every day I see on Teletext that all these players have been released and it is a really uncertain time for a player out of contract. It's good to get it tied up for another year.

"We haven't good too many players at the moment but I'm sure that the gaffer will have his contacts and his scouts out there and we'll have some decent players in by the start of the season.

"It's part and parcel nowadays that you try to keep your fitness during the summer, it's not like the old days when players used to balloon and then come back and run it off.

"You need a few weeks to chill out. I'll have my holidays and then I'll be looking forward to playing again."

For Clarkey signing a new deal capped a perfect weekend as his beloved Sunderland survived the drop.

"They should have done a lot better than they did, but it's been a perfect end to the season for me with Sunderland staying up and Newcastle going down."
