THE Mariners are working hard to try and capture the signature of Leeds United midfielder Peter Sweeney ahead of the new season.
Speaking to Mariners World, Town boss Mike Newell said: "The chairman is working hard on that, Ian Fleming's working hard on that. We'll do everything possible to try and persuade the player that this is the place he should come to play.
"I know he enjoyed his time here. It was a successful time. If you look at the rest of the season, those last 12 or so games were our most successful spell.
"He is a good lad on and off the pitch and he has good ability. I have said it before that he is a player I am really keen on and I would like to get him to Grimsby. It is something we are working on."
"There's all sorts of influences and other factors that have a bearing on it."
And the Town boss says that he won't be rushed into bringing a keeper in.
He said: "I've spoke about a lot of goalkeepers but I haven't spoke to anybody specifically yet. That's a thing that we need to get right. We showed how important that position was to us at the back end of last season."
