WHILST most football teams are just entering pre-season training, a dedicated bunch of Grimsby Fans will be competing in the Internet Football Associations "World Cup" in Leeds this weekend. The two day tournament, called WorldNet, in Leeds will see over 70 teams competing for the honour of being WorldNet Champions.
The Grimsby Town supporter's team, Internet Mariners, will be looking to build on their excellent season which saw them finish 14th out of 80 teams.
The weekend kicks off on Friday night with an International game between England and Scotland. The Mariners are delighted that their star player Paul Parker has been selected as part of the England squad. "It's an absolute honour to be selected to play for England and I hope I can do Grimsby fans proud" Parker told gtfc.co.uk.
Internet Mariners manager Craig Nuttall explained that the weekend is about building bridges with fellow supports; "…whilst it's always nice to win games the main focus of the weekend is meeting new and familiar faces within the IFA family. This is the tenth WorldNet and we've been lucky enough to attend nearly all of them, here's hoping that the weather is kind to us and we can come back with some silverware!"
The Mariners are taking a 15 man squad over to Leeds and Grimsby will also be represented in the Veterans tournament, which runs alongside the main competition, by fellow supporters team Grimsby Old Skool.
