Town Book Place In Final

Posted on: Sat 31 Jul 2010

Town 4 (Bore, Connell, Garner, Cummins) Lincoln City 2 (McCallum 2)

GRIMSBY Town will travel to local rivals Scunthorpe United on Tuesday night after disposing of Lincoln City in the Lincolnshire Senior Cup Semi Final by four goals to two at Blundell Park.

It was a wet Friday night in Cleethorpes but it was raining goals in the first half at Blundell Park with all six goals coming in a sensational first 45 minutes. The Mariners were given permission to play trialists Dwayne Samuels, a former West Brom right back and left winger Robert Eagle, an ex-Norwich trainee who was most recently at Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

The visitors had some experienced names in their line-up with veterans Paul Musselwhite and Jamie Clapham alongside former Notts County striker Delroy Facey. Meanwhile, youngster Rob Peet lined up in goal for Town, whilst Peter Bore returned from injury at right wing.

Both sides showed their attacking intent early on but it was the Red Imps who took the lead on 12 minutes. A corner was swung across by Clark Keltie and flicked on by Facey with his strike partner Gavin McCallum getting the final touch.

Town responded well and drew level shortly after. Micky Cummins threaded a pass through into the path of BORE and he cut inside to rifle his shot into the corner from 18 yards. The Mariners had their tails up now and from their next attack they took the lead. It was another fine move from Neil Woods' side, which built down the right with Bore and Samuels linking up well. The former crossed from the byline and Alan CONNELL stole a march on his marker to nod home his second goal in as many home games.

The home fans barely had time to celebrate before the Red Imps equalised. Again a set piece was the Mariners' undoing and it was McCullum again who was left unmarked to nod home from six yards after another Facey flick-on.

The fifth goal of the evening arrived almost immediately and this time it was Town who profited from a corner when Scott GARNER rose highest to plant his header beyond Musselwhite on 28 minutes.

Town were hungry for more and another neat move brought about the hosts' fourth on 31 minutes. Samuels, Bore, Connell and Coulson were involved with the build-up, which ended when CUMMINS raced through to finish beyond Musselwhite from just inside the area.

Woods' side were again fluent in the second half and deserved to add more goals to their tally. There was some beautiful interchanging passing and movement from the Mariners and Coulson was denied by Musselwhite when played through by Connell.

Darran Kempson continued to be a threat from set pieces and was twice thwarted by the aging stopper, whilst at the other end, Bradley Wood acrobatically cleared substitute Chris Fagan's effort off the line with 20 minutes remaining.

There was only one side who looked like adding to the scoreline and that was the Mariners. Connell and Michael Leary both fired over after working openings before Musselwhite denied Cummins down low at the far post.

The Mariners exited to a standing ovation from the majority of the 1561 in attendance and will now look forward to their Championship test on Tuesday night.
