Young left-back Joe Widdowson became Mike Newell's first signing of the January transfer window when he joined the Mariners on a one-month loan from West Ham United.
Newell told the highly rated player that he was wanted at Blundell Park and he returned to sign a permanent deal during the summer.
The 20-year-old made his impact on the Hammers' first team during their pre-season tour of America where he man-marked England's David Beckham in a game against the MLS All-Stars.
