Grimsby Town manager Russell Slade says his players are looking forward to tonight's friendly away at Bideford AFC.

The Mariners play their first of two friendly fixtures over the course of their five-day stay in Devon tonight, and the Town boss says the players are excited to get some more minutes under their belts.

Speaking on iFollow after the team's training session this morning, he said: “It's [about] attitude when you're playing teams that are not in the League.

“We're making sure we've got a good, positive mental attitude and we approach it the right way, as we have done in all the pre-season games – the lads have put in some professional performances.

“We'll approach it like we approach any game in the league.

“It was a long journey for some of the lads yesterday. They've had their rest, and we've fed them, and having got that training session under our belts today, we'll be looking forward to the game tonight.

“It's all about preparation and the physical work, and slowly but surely putting that technical element and philosophy together, as we did against Barnsley.

“We've trained again, and some have trained more heavy than others because they're maybe not getting the minutes that others are getting.”

Slade went on to give a special mention to the Town fans who are travelling down to Devon for tonight's friendly.

“Fantastic loyalty, coming all the way down, it's a long trip! But it's their team and they want to see the team evolve, and that's what we're attempting to do.

“They may see one or two new players on show tonight, so that's something for them to look forward to, and hopefully they'll see some good performances from their players,” he said.

The gaffer also praised new signing Harry Cardwell.

He said: “Harry's a talented player, he's already shown that. He's scored goals, and he's getting better every single day with our help.

“He's 20, like Dembele and Ben [Killip], and I think it adds balance to the group – some younger ones that we know have got improvement in them going forward, and they're talented.”

The Mariners eased to victory in the first fixture in Devon at Bideford AFC tonight. Goals by Mitch Rose (2), Scott Vernon and Adi Yussuf sealed the win.

Town boss Russell Slade included three unnamed trialists in tonight’s side.

The visitors were quick out of the blocks and soon had Bideford under pressure.

Dembele and Kelly combined well down the left before the latter’s volley drifted just wide.

But minutes later Town were ahead. After a mix-up in the Bideford defence, Mitch Rose nipped in to stab the ball home.

On 21 minutes Town almost doubled the lead when Berrett’s low free-kick went inches wide.

Dembele saw his effort turned around the post by the Bideford keeper, before Scott Vernon's neat flick came back off the post.

On 44 minutes Town deservedly doubled their lead, as Rose broke through the home defence and smashed the ball home.

Half-Time: Bideford AFC 0-1 Grimsby Town

Almost straight after the interval the Mariners were three ahead, this time it was Scott Vernon's turn to get onto the score-sheet, tapping home at the far post.

And Vernon almost got his second soon after. Town hit the hosts on the break, but this time the big striker's cross-shot went just wide.

It was all change on the hour as Russell Slade sent on  Adi Yussuf, Harry Cardwell, Luke Summerfield, Tom Bolarinwa, Jamie Osborne, Ben Davies, Jack Keeble and two trialists -  replacing Scott Vernon,  Sam Jones, Siriki Dembele, Nathan Clarke, Danny Collins, trialist, Zak Mills, Sam Kelly, and James Berrett.

On 65 minutes Town looked to have gone further ahead but one of the trialist's shot rebounded off the post and fell kindly into the keeper's hands.

But the fourth was soon to come - as Adi Yussuf out-paced the Bideford defence and slotted the ball under the keeper.

On 74 minutes Bideford almost pulled one back, but Smallcombe's strike bounced off the post and was cleared.

Good play down the left by Summerfield and a whipped cross, found the head of Osborne, but his effort was fielded well by the home side's stopper.
