Match Previews

Match preview for Cleethorpes Town

30 June 2017

The Mariners will give former Hull City, Reading and Brighton striker Harry Cardwell a run-out at Cleethorpes Town tonight (7.15pm). The 20 year-old, who has represented Scotland at Under 21 level, is currently training with Town.

Sam Jones is a big doubt ahead of tonight's pre season opener. The Town frontman is struggling with a knee problem and will be assessed ahead of kick-off.

Harry Clifton is also set to miss out with an ankle injury. The young midfielder picked up the injury during the summer and has missed the first week of pre season training.

Akwasi Asante is the only other absentee. The frontman has been ruled out of the summer schedule – and is not likely to be available until September at the earliest.

James McKeown and one of the trialist keepers will play parts in the fixture at Bradley. Keepers Ben Killip, Sam Ramsbottom and Oliver Pain have been on trial with Andy Warrington during our pre-season schedule.

Town boss Russell Slade will give all of his first-team squad some game time tonight.

Match Report: Cleethorpes Town 2-4 Grimsby Town

Apologies, this video is unvailable.

Town First Half: McKeown, Wright, Collins, Keeble, Davies, Berrett, Clements, Summerfield, Bolarinwa, Vernon, Kelly.

Town had to come back from two goals down to eventually win the first pre season game at Cleethorpes Town 4-2 tonight.

Goals from Andy Taylor and Cooper had given the hosts a 2-0 lead, before James Berrett, trialist Harry Cardwell and Adi Yussuf - and a superb half way line strike from Jamey Osborne – secured the win for the Mariners.

With just seven minutes on the clock, a stray back pass saw former Mariner Andy Taylor latch onto the ball, round James McKeown, before turning the ball home.

Minutes later, the Owls had doubled their advantage as the ball fell to Cooper at the back post after some good work down the right, with the striker tapping home.

Town's response was immediate following the wake-up call, as Luke Summerfield crossed the ball into the path of James Berrett, who headed home from close in.

Town Second Half: Killip; Mills, Boyce, Clarke, Venney; Dembele, Rose, McAllister, Osborne; Cardwell, Yussuf.

A complete change at half time saw trialist keeper Ben Killip introduced and striker Harry Cardwell. And it wasn't long until Cardwell made his mark on the game, as just minutes later he received the ball on the edge of the box before turning and firing to bring the Mariners level.

Then, on 71 minutes, Jamie Osborne scored what must be an early contender for goal of the season. The midfielder won the ball in midfield, spotted the Owl's keeper off his line, before measuring a perfect lob over the keeper and into the net.

Adi Yussuf wrapped up a good night for Town with a thmping finish into the roof of the net after some good work down the right by the impressive Dembele.

And there was time for the visitors to extend their advantage, as Adi Yussuf made sure of the win with a thumping strike after some good work from Dembele.
