We Must Respond Again - Slade

23 September 2017

Grimsby Town’s two-game win streak came to an end this afternoon as the Mariners fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat to Newport County at Rodney Parade.

There were 3,356 (with 243 Town fans) in attendance to see ex-Mariner Padraig Amond grab the only goal of the game, for the Exiles, on 63 minutes as he found space in the box and guided it past Town goalkeeper McKeown.

Mariners boss Russell Slade made one change to the side that beat Yeovil Town 2-1 last week, as Mitch Rose returned from injury and replaced Summerfield in midfield.

McKeown started in goal, with a back four of Davies, Clarke (c), Collins, and Dixon.

Dembele, Berrett, Rose, and Woolford made up the midfield, while Jones partnered Matt up top.

The first real chance of the game came for the home side on nine minutes as Rigg drilled a low ball in from the left-wing, but Dixon was there to clear it out for a corner before Tozer could get his foot to it at the back post.

But the Mariners had their opportunity to get ahead just a minute later as Matt used his skill to cut in from the right-wing and loop a ball over to Dixon on the far side, whose header could only find the side-netting.

The visitors, though, forced a double save from McKeown on 15 minutes as he initially kicked away Tozer’s low-driven shot, before catching O’Brien’s volley just seconds later.

After a tight first half hour with few chances, Town almost got their goal on 38 minutes when Dembele broke down the left before playing it behind to Dixon, whose cross was met by Matt but Day managed to keep it out with a good save.

But it was the Exiles who had the last chance of the first period as Collins had to clear a header off the line on 45 minutes to ensure it remained goalless at the break.

Half-time: Newport County 0-0 Grimsby Town

Town made one change at the break, as Summerfield came on for Rose.

The Mariners registered the first shot on target of the second period on 52 minutes, as Matt latched onto Woolford’s ball before swivelling and volleying it goalward but Day got down low to save it comfortably.

And Town looked to have broken the deadlock on the hour-mark as Jones carried the ball from deep before releasing Matt, who shimmied past a defender and slotted it beyond Day, but the centre-forward was judged to be offside.

But it was the home side who found the net three minutes later as ex-Town man Amond brought it down in the box and got away from his marker, before poking it past McKeown to make it 1-0.

Town skipper Clarke was the only player to be carded as he received a yellow from referee Antony Coggins for a foul on 70 minutes, and the Mariners made their second change of the game a minute later as Jaiyesimi replaced Dembele.

And the Mariners made their final change of the game with 15 minutes left to play, with Hooper coming on for Woolford, as Town placed extra emphasis on attack and continued to search for an equaliser.

And they almost got what they were looking for three minutes later when Summerfield found space on the edge of the area and hit one with real power, but Demetriou headed it away for a corner kick.

Michael Flynn made his first change of the game on 78 minutes as he brought Bennett on for Labadie, and the Exiles made another substitute four minutes later as Butler replaced O’Brien.

The home side made their final sub with a minute to go as goalscorer Amond was replaced by McCoulsky.

Referee Coggins blew the final whistle as it ended 1-0 to the hosts.
