We were saddened to hear of the passing of former Mariners’ striker Willie Purvis, who died peacefully at his home on Cleethorpes on 30th July after a long illness.
Willie played for the promotion side of 1961/62 and spent two seasons as a Mariner and settled back in the area after hanging up his playing boots following a spell with Doncaster.
Born in Berwick in 1938, Willie’s football career began with Alnwick Town before he joined his hometown club in 1959, where he scored eight times in 21 league outings.
After two years with the Scottish league side, Willie moved south to Blundell Park, initially on trial. He made his debut for the Mariners in a 2-0 defeat at Southend United but went on to score twice in six appearances for Town during the season, culminating in promotion from Division Three.
Willie made one more appearance for Town before joining Doncaster Rovers, where he played a further two games.
Our thoughts are with Willie’s wife Chris, daughter Christine and son Michael, as well as the rest of his family and friends, at this sad time.
Willie’s funeral service takes place at Grimsby Crematorium today, Friday 17th August 2012, at 1.00pm.
