Second-half goals from Alan Connell and Michael Leary made it back-to-back victories on the road for the Mariners and gave new managers Rob Scott and Paul Hurst a better idea of what their Grimsby Town squad is capable of.
It was a game of two halves at Holker Street; the first devoid of any chances or endeavour from either side but in the second period the Mariners really showed their mettle and deserved to come away with all three points.
The hosts started the brighter of the two sides and visiting stopper Kenny Arthur had to be on hand to cut out a couple of dangerous set pieces from Paul Rutherford.
At the other end, Rob Duffy had the first shot on target for the visitors as both sides laboured in this end of season encounter.
But the Mariners upped the tempo in the second period and took the lead with a strike of real class from leading goalscorer Alan Connell on 54 minutes.
The former Bournemouth man found himself 25 yards from goal and lofted in an exquisite chip over the head of former Town trialist Clark Masters and into the top corner of the goal.
That effort spurred the Mariners on even further and they doubled their advantage with 19 minutes remaining through the unlikely source of Michael Leary.
This time Connell was the provider – swinging in a corner after substitute Lee Peacock had seen his shot turned behind – and Leary was left unmarked to plant a header home from eight yards and notch his first goal for the club.
The home side offered little in the final third and it was the men from North East Lincolnshire who came closest to adding to the scoreline, Micky Cummins heading wide from another Connell corner.
