THE Mariners completed their pre-season build-up with a disappointing 2-1 defeat at Grantham Town this afternoon.
Joint bosses Paul Hurst and Rob Scott fielded a completely different line-up to last night’s draw at Gainsborough Trinity.
But it was another lacklustre display from the professionals who fell behind early on when the lively Jamie McGhee opened the scoring for the hosts.
Town were struggling to make any opportunities of their own and were two-down nine minutes before the break.
Paulo Pillerio’s excellent run and cross from the right was superbly flicked home by Romaine Graham at the near post with James McKeown wrong-footed.
This seemed to temporarily arouse the Mariners who pulled a goal back within two minutes – Ross Hannah firing home a 25-yard free-kick in style.
And the visitors also started the second period well, with Sam Hatton seeing a shot beaten away by home keeper Dan Haystead before Paul Bignot fired an effort wide and Hannah headed over the bar.
However, the equaliser wouldn’t come, and the part-timers should have made it three from the penalty spot in the final five minutes.
Young centre-half Hamish Falconer hauled down Karl Demidh, but McKeown did superbly to push the same player’s spot-kick away and spare any further embarrassment.
