GRIMSBY Town groundsman Mike Phillips has scooped The FA Groundsman of the Year Award.
Mike fought off some stiff competition from finalists Daniel Hunter, Boreham Wood, Steven Ollerenshaw, Chester FC, Stewart Ward, Forest Green Rovers and Graham Gould from Staines Town
The FA’s Groundsmen of the Year was set up to recognise the contribution of the unsung heroes of the grass roots game and encourage the development of groundmanship.
Speaking to gtfc.co.uk, Mike said: “It’s a tremendous honour and I would like to thank Aaron and Derek who help me with the pitch.
“The Judges not only look at the quality of the pitch, but also take into consideration the resources that we have available, how often the pitch is used, and the amount of time that we are able to work on the pitch.”
The awards presentation was held at the National Football Centre at St. George’s Park, where all of the winners were treated to a tour of the facilities and a presentation by St. George’s Park Head Groundsman Alan Ferguson.
