Town's Futsal Through To Semis

1 April 2014

Soccer AM Cup Quarter Final vs Huddersfield Town. Birmingham Futsal Arena- 01/04/2014

Grimsby Town 5-1 Huddersfield Town

The Grimsby Town Futsal Scholars booked themselves a place in the Semi Finals of the National Soccer AM Cup after coming from behind to beat Huddersfield Town 5-1 in the quarter finals.

Grimsby began the brightest of the 2 teams with Tom Watters the pivot of Grimsby's offence immediately making his physical presence known setting up a few half chances. But it was Huddersfield who opened the scoring taking advantage of a counter attack after Grimsby had over committed men forward.

The next 10 minutes was very much a case of Grimsby trying to break down the Huddersfield defence and Huddersfield looking to counter. This period saw both teams create chances but no one capitalising on their opportunities. As half time approached Nathan Lambert and Jack Burrows began to dominate the middle third and Grimsby began to get on top forcing the Huddersfield keeper into producing 3 or 4 excellent saves in quick succession.

Mark Westerby, the Grimsby coach, sensed a goal was close and called a time out to tinker with the tactics and introduce some attacking personnel in the form of Jack Blendell and Dan Marshall. Mark Westerby could not have hoped for a bigger impact from the changes!

Firstly substitute Dan Marshall rounded the keeper and slotted into an empty net to bring the Mariners level. Then before the celebrating Grimsby bench had time to re-take their seats the ball was in the net again, this time the other substitute Jack Blendell tucked the ball away after a good ball in from Dan Marshall. Grimsby had turned the game on it's head and went into the interval 2-1 up.

Huddersfield started the second half the brightest as they knew they next goal was key and would have been level just after the restart but for the unbelievable reactions of Liam Cooper in the Grimsby goal, saving a powerful strike from point blank range.

This was enough to shock Grimsby into action and they began to get to grips with the Huddersfield pressure. Midway through the second half came the crucial goal, after some patient build up play Dan Marshall was slipped in and he beat the Huddersfield keeper to the ball to poke the ball home.

Just like they did in the first half Grimsby immediately won the ball back through a good bit of break up play by Jake Marshall and went on the attack. This lead to Grimsby securing their second quick fire double of the game, Matt Perrin drilling the ball into the corner from the edge of the box after a half clearance by Huddersfield and putting the Mariners 4-1 up.

With the tie essentially over and the pressure off, Grimsby endured long periods of possession in the closing stages but James Dickson (on for Liam Cooper) in the sticks still had to be on his guard  making a super one on one save. Despite this there was still enough time however for Connor Watson to get on the scoresheet and ensure Grimsby's name went into the hat for the next round.

The semi finals and final will be played at Birmingham Futsal arena on Sunday 27th April where Grimsby could face Leeds United, Notts County or Derby County. The draw for the semi finals will be live on Soccer AM this Saturday.
