GRIMSBY Town came through their final pre-season test as they beat Brigg Town at The Hawthorns.
A Town side made up of a mixture of first-teamers and youth players got off to a good start, with Jon-Paul Pittman and Lewis Bemrose giving them a 2-0 lead within 18 minutes.
The home side got one back through Josh Nichol before the break but the Mariners were rarely troubled as they eased through the rest of the game to claim the victory.
Town started in a 3-5-2 formation, with Callum Bastock in goal and wing-backs Paul Walker and Paul Bignot ahead of Toto Nsiala, Shaun Pearson and Ellis Humble.
Josh Venney, Scott Neilson and Caine Winfarrah formed the midfield trio, with Pittman alongside Bemrose up front.
Winfarrah almost broke the deadlock five minutes in but his shot from 25 yards hit both posts before coming back out to safety.
Five minutes later, the Mariners were ahead when a free kick from the left was half-cleared before being lofted back into the danger zone for PITTMAN to steer into the net.
Town doubled their advantage on 18 minutes after a good build-up down the right. The ball was pulled back for BEMROSE and he slammed it home from inside the penalty area.
Venney, who had impressed in the centre of midfield, went close to making it 3-0 when his curling shot from long range narrowly missed the target.
Then a low cross from Winfarrah led to a snap-shot from Pittman being well stopped by Brigg keeper Jody Barford.
The hosts had rarely threatened throughout the half but they pulled one back 10 minutes before the break through NICHOL, who got on the end of a cross from the left to head past Bastock.
The Mariners looked to restore their two-goal cushion and they went close with a flowing move on 38 minutes, which saw the ball played to Pittman, who controlled it before Bemrose shot onto the roof of the net.
The young striker was then unable to get on the end of a low cross-shot from Bignot on the left just before half-time, meaning Town were forced to settle for a one-goal lead at the interval.
Callum Jennings replaced Pittman before the restart, while Ryan Musselwhite, son of former Scunthorpe goalkeeper Paul, replaced Barford between the Brigg sticks two minutes short of the hour.
Jordan Barnett came on for Venney on 60 minutes and as the half wore on, neither side looked likely to add to the scoring.
Chances were few and far between at both ends and neither keeper was seriously troubled over the course of the 45 minutes.
Josh Sunter replaced Nsiala for the last few minutes before the final whistle signalled the end of Town’s pre-season action, with the serious stuff now set to get under way when they travel to Bristol Rovers for the Conference opener on Saturday.
Town: Bastock, Nsiala (Sunter,87), Humble, Pearson, Bignot, Walker, Venney (Barnett, 60), Winfarrah, Neilson, Bemrose, Pittman (Jennings, 46).
