A Season To Remember

28 June 2014

GRIMSBY Town's first every Futsal Scholars made sure they finished the course with a bang by completing an unforgettable Treble of silverware.

Most of the scholars who started in September 2012 finished their Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport this June made sure their names would live long in the history books by completing an epic treble.

On June 22nd 2014 Grimsby Town's Futsal team earned the third of three major honours by winning the National Championship, at Birmingham International Futsal arena. This victory, probably the biggest achievement of the three, meant Grimsby took a clean sweep of all the trophies on offer this season. The finals involved a one - day tournament in which all the Champions of their individual regional leagues met in a Champions League format competition. Grimsby edged the final 1-0 with a goal in the last minute against Derby County, the same team they played in the memorable Soccer AM Cup Final just two months earlier.

Grimsby Futsal's first silverware came in the newly formed Soccer AM Futsal Cup, another round robin tournament held from January to April, with all highlights shown on the Soccer AM show. The Mariners beat Crystal Palace, Huddersfield and Notts County on route to the final where they met Derby County who were considered to be tournament favourites. In a nail-biting final, full of twists and turns, Grimsby's young guns won 7-6 with a last minute goal from Jack Blendell, to be crowned the first ever winners of the Soccer AM Futsal Cup.

Just three days later the scholars were celebrating again when they won the North East League 1 title with a game to spare. The league ran from October until May against rival teams from the region such as Leeds, Bradford, Scunthorpe, Hull and Doncaster. This, the second success of the season, meant the team qualified for the national finals, a trophy they went on to lift.

Gimsby's B team, made up mainly of first year scholars, also had a very successful first year. They lifted the North East League 2 title in excellent fashion but fell just short at the League 2 National finals. They were knocked out by the eventual winners - an experienced Sheffield United side in the quarter – finals. With another year left on the programme this experience will surely put them in an strong position next year.

Winning all three trophies means that no club will ever better the Grimsby Town Futsal team of 2014.

Not only were the scholars triumphant on the court they were also extremely successful in the classroom. All 11 of the scholars passed their Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma that they have studied towards, for the past two years at Blundell Park. The scholars also had a 100% acceptance rate for University applications and will be heading off the various parts of the UK to continue their academic career in sport in September.

There is still time to apply to be part of this year’s intake of new scholars!
