OUR Youth Team rounded off their season with a 2-0 win against local rivals Scunthorpe United on Saturday morning at Cheapside.
Goals from Reece York and Lewis Bemrose saw Alan Lamb’s side wrap up their campaign with an impressive eight wins from ten games, which includes seven league victories and a friendly success over Boston United.
Town were the dominant side in the first half, with the Iron causing them few problems and should’ve taken the lead early on. Max Wright went on a fantastic run down the left wing from the halfway beating two players and evading a challenge in the box before cutting the ball back to Josh Venney, who hit over from close range.
The side got their reward for their first half performance on the half hour mark. Wright played a neat one-two with Reece York, who then rifled the ball into the bottom corner to give Town the lead.
After the break, Scunthorpe started slightly the better but Town quickly took command again and doubled their lead soon after. The goal came when Harry Clifton played in Bemrose on the right hand side of the box and he terrifically fired the ball past United’s goalkeeper from a tight angle.
Clifton also went close to scoring himself when he clipped the top of the bar from around twenty yards out late on, and that was the final action of a game where the Mariners thoroughly deserved their victory.
The North West division of the Football League Youth Alliance ended with Bradford City winning the league, whilst Town finished up in seventh place.
