Multi-Cultural Funday

Shaun Supports Knockout Event alongside Boxing Legend

GRIMSBY Town defender Shaun Pearson met up with a true British sporting legend in the shape of former WBC World Heavyweight Boxing Champion Frank Bruno at a charity event in Grimsby on Sunday.

The pair were guests at Communities Together’s Multicultural Funday, which was held at Oasis Academy Wintringham and featured sporting and musical activities from around the globe.

Organised by Communities Together, Oasis Academy Wintringham, YMCA Humber and our own Sports and Education Trust, over 2,000 people turned out on the day and enjoyed the opportunity to have their photos taken with both Shaun and Frank.

Shaun’s appearance came less than 24 hours after he had lost a tooth after a collision in the 2-2 draw with Torquay United.

He said: “If I smile I look like I have been in the ring with Frank!

“But seriously, it has been an honour to meet him, he is one of our sporting greats and he’s still adored by the public for all he’s done.”

And Bruno was delighted to be in the town to support Communities Together’s first multicultural funday.

He added: “"There was a very nice vibe a nice mix of down to earth people.

“We've all got friends and family and we all want more peace, less war and more days like this.

“Cultures should come together more often; everyone has enjoyed themselves.

“I’ve loved it, being able to meet people who have been to some of my fights is nice. Everyone has said nice things.”

Shaun also took the opportunity to partake in some of the activities on the day, including the Middle Eastern board game of Carrom.

He continued: “I’d never heard of Carrom before today but it’s nice to be able to come and enjoy things from over cultures and meet fans from different backgrounds.

“Football is a sport enjoyed the world over, so it’s important as players that we do our bit to reach out to everyone.”

Communities Together would like to thank their sponsors on the day, North East Lincolnshire Chinese Community, Nunns Motors, Bridge McFarland, Grimsby Institute, Mayfair Estate Agents and Seaway Fish and Chip Restaurant.
