National League Round Up

14 August 2015

Eastleigh, Chester FC, Forest Green Rovers and relegated Tranmere Rovers all won on Tuesday night to make it two wins from their opening two Vanarama National League matches of the new season.

The Spitfires, who have made some excellent summer signings and are looking to ensure their fine 2014/15 season wasn`t a `one-off` after winning promotion, have yet to concede a goal, having beaten Southport 4-0 on the opening day and then seeing off newlypromoted Boreham Wood 1-0 on Tuesday. In fact Tranmere are the only 100% side who have leaked a goal in the wrong end, while also netting five themselves in victories over Woking and Gateshead.

Many fancied FC Halifax Town to do well this season after seeing Neil Aspin make some shrewd summer recruits.

However, the new-look Shaymen appear to be taking time to gel and have suffered successive defeats to Boreham Wood and Chester respectively.
Danny Cowley has kept the majority of the squad he inherited off Alan Devonshire at Braintree Town, but the Iron have also suffered back-to-back defeats at Chester and at home against Lincoln City.

Of the promoted teams, all have started in similar fashion. Boreham Wood have that victory over the Shaymen and defeat at Eastleigh to date, Bromley, who came up with Wood as southern champions, beat Wrexham on the opening Saturday and then suffered a 2-0 loss at Woking on Tuesday, northern champions Barrow AFC were unable to follow up their opening win over Dover Athletic, going down 4-1 at Grimsby Town, and Guiseley AFC saw off Altrincham 1-0 at Nethermoor in midweek after going down to Welling United by the same scoreline in their debut in the top flight.
