National League Round Up

27 August 2015

Clubs in the Vanarama National League have had a well-deserved midweek break after a hectic start to the new 2015/16 season.

Ady Pennock’s Forest Green Rovers side have made a marvellous start, last Saturday’s 3-1 success against Lincoln City at the New Lawn being their fifth in succession.

They make the relatively short trip to Aggborough to take on a Kidderminster Harriers outfit who, in contrast, have started slowly, gaining just two draws from their opening five matches.

Forest Green are one of just three teams yet to taste defeat in the new campaign – Eastleigh and Cheltenham Town being the other two.

Richard Hill’s Spitfires enjoyed a terrific first season at the top level of non-League football last term and the early signs are that it wasn’t a flash in the pan!

Cheltenham, under the wily and experienced guidance of Gary Johnson, who knows all about this level, beat newly-promoted Barrow AFC last Saturday to make it two wins and three draws from their first five matches and, while the Robins have been miserly at the back, the fact that they have only managed to score 7 times at the other end may be of concern to Johnson long-term.

It will be interesting to see if he tries to do more business in the transfer market to strengthen his attacking options whilst the window remains open.

That end of the pitch certainly doesn’t seem to be a problem for Grimsby Town, who have smashed in 13 in their five games. However, their momentum was halted somewhat by Torquay United last weekend.

Southport, FC Halifax Town and Kidderminster will all be desperately keen to get off the mark on Saturday, with both Port and the Shaymen only managing a single point to date.
