Conference Round Up

26 March 2015

Steve Whitney brings us a round-up from the Vanarama Conference.

LAST weekend saw Barnet make an emphatic move towards the Vanarama Conference title by hammering relegation-threatened Welling United 5-0 at The Hive. The same day saw Macclesfield Town slip up by losing 1-0 at the Moss Rose to another of the strugglers, Nuneaton Town, while Grimsby Town enjoyed a 2-1 success at Blundell Park against play-off chasing Eastleigh – all after Bristol Rovers had seen off Aldershot Town 3-1 at the Memorial Ground on the Friday night.

The Mariners’ 1-0 win at Dover Athletic on Tuesday moved them back into title contention, courtesy of Lenell John-Lewis’  early 6th minute winner. On Saturday the Mariners face a third-bottom Welling side who are in desperate need of the points as the Wings are now 5 points behind fifth bottom Alfreton Town, who have drawn their last two home matches against Chester FC and Dartford respectively. Nicky Law’s Reds host for a third successive time on Saturday when leaders Barnet come to the Impact Arena.

However, the game of the day sees Macclesfield take on Bristol Rovers at home live on BT Sport. And BT Sport couldn’t have picked a potentially more exciting encounter as both teams need to win if they are to maintain a challenge for the automatic promotion spot. Kick-off at the Moss Rose is 12.30pm, and with it being an international break, a big crowd is expected.

AFC Telford United could find themselves all but down on Saturday should they fail to pick anything up from their long trip to Dover, but they go to Crabble in good spirits following a 2-0 win at Braintree Town in front of the live TV cameras on Tuesday. And good luck to Wrexham and Vanarama Conference North side North Ferriby United, who do battle for the FA Trophy at Wembley Stadium on Sunday.
