Vanarama National League Round-Up

12 November 2015

Tuesday night saw Forest Green Rovers lose the leadership of the Vanarama National League for the first time since the opening week of the season.

Neighbours Cheltenham Town took over at the summit following a 5-0 home thumping of Guiseley AFC, while Ady Pennock’s side could only manage a 1-1 draw at lowly Welling United, leaving the Robins a point clear at the top.

Third-place Dover Athletic were beaten at Crabble by fourth-placed Eastleigh, while Grimsby Town complete the play-off places after recording a 3-1 win at Barrow AFC.

Below the Mariners though it’s extremely congested, with only five points separating them from fourteenth-placed Chester FC, who enjoyed a 3-1 win against bottom-markers Kidderminster Harriers on Tuesday.

However, Grimsby could find themselves out of the top five by the time they entertain Welling at Blundell Park on Saturday as sixth-placed Bromley take on struggling Altrincham in the lunchtime BT Sport offering.

Mark Goldberg’s Ravens will be eager to bounce back after suffering a surprise home defeat on Tuesday to fifth-bottom Boreham Wood.

Another crucial game at the weekend sees Forest Green take on Dover at the New Lawn, while Cheltenham travel north to play third-bottom

Last weekend was largely a successful one for the league in the Emirates FA Cup, with Forest Green, Altrincham and Eastleigh all beating League opposition and Grimsby, Welling and possibly Braintree Town and Boreham Wood, who both face replays, joining National League South side Whitehawk in the Second Round.

And they could be joined by south section Maidenhead United and possibly National League North outfit Brackley Town as both face replays.

The Mariners’ tie at home against League One Shrewsbury looks a stand-out fixture.
