Vanarama National League Round Up

9 October 2015

Steve Whitney's weekly round-up of the National League.

Forest Green Rovers returned to the top of the Vanarama National League table on Wednesday night after a 3-0 win at the EBB Stadium against Aldershot Town.

Ady Pennock’s side put on an impressive show for the live BT Sport cameras to end a run of five games which had produced just two points.

That loss of form after a fantastic start allowed Cheltenham Town to move above their neighbours to briefly head the table. The Robins thumped FC Halifax Town 7-1 last Saturday but could only lead the table on goal difference on Tuesday after being held to a 1-1 draw at home by Braintree Town. Tranmere Rovers, who came down with the Robins from League Two at the end of last season, are now third after their unbeaten run was stretched to nine games with a 2-2 draw at Wrexham on Tuesday.

Experienced striker Andy Mangan is proving to be a shrewd signing by Tranmere boss Gary Brabin – the ex-Forest Green and Wrexham player has scored five times in the last four matches, including a brace in the 4-0 win at Prenton Park against Bromley last Saturday. Despite that defeat at Tranmere, Bromley and Dover Athletic occupy the other two top five spots and lead the way for the part-time clubs.

The National League is so strong now and contains so many former Football League sides, that part-time outfits are finding it harder and harder to compete on a level playing field, so it’s great credit to Mark Goldberg and Chris Kinnear that their teams are going so well.

This Saturday’s action kicks-off on Saturday lunchtime when BT Sport bring us the game between Macclesfield Town and Kidderminster Harriers from the Moss Rose.

Many pundits thought these two teams would be up there challenging at the top, but Harriers find themselves rock-bottom and still searching for their first win of 2015/16 – could it come live on TV?
