Vanarama National League Round Up

16 October 2015

IT'S been another topsy-turvy week for Vanarama National League leaders Forest Green Rovers.

Last Saturday saw Ady Pennock’s side ruthlessly put away newcomers Guiseley AFC 3-0 at The New Lawn, but then on Tuesday they suffered a best-of-five defeat at managerless Eastleigh, whose caretaker boss Chris Todd has certainly done his chances of a full-time post no harm, especially after winning at Tranmere at the weekend too.

Second-placed Cheltenham Town trail their neighbours by two points, but it could have been level pegging at the summit had the Robins managed to beat Gateshead last Saturday instead of coming home with just one point.

Tuesday saw Gary Johnson’s side edge out Bromley 2-1 in another away journey on an evening when late goals proved key. Asa Hall came off the bench to net Cheltenham’s winner in the first minute of injury-time, as did Ross Lafayette for Eastleigh against the leaders, although the substitutes’ match-winner came in the 2nd minute of time added on.

Chester FC’s Ben Heneghan scored the winner in a 2-1 success at struggling Southport with less than 6 minutes remaining, while sub Afolabi Obafemi scored the winner 5 minutes from time as Welling United beat Lincoln City at Park View Road.

However, perhaps the cruellest last-gasp goal was scored by Altrincham’s Michael Rankine – his effort 5 minutes into time added on prevented Kidderminster Harriers from earning that elusive first victory in a 2-2 draw at Moss Lane.

It has been a good week for Macclesfield Town, who beat Harriers last Saturday lunchtime in front of the BT Sport cameras and followed that up with another Moss Rose victory on Tuesday, 1-0 against Gateshead, to send John Askey’s men up to 11th in the table – just three points off a top five slot.
