Having lost Wrexham, Kidderminster Harriers, Gateshead, Torquay United & Barrow AFC to lower league opposition in the Emirates FA Cup last Saturday, Monday’s First Round Proper draw pulled out one or two plum ties for teams in the Vanarama National League.
Arguably the most attractive is Macclesfield Town’s visit to Portsmouth’s Fratton Park where one of the biggest crowds of the round is virtually assured.
Aldershot Town hosting Bradford City at the EBB Stadium, Altrincham at home to Barnsley and Eastleigh visiting a Crewe Alexandra outfit who have a dreadful recent record in the FA Cup are three other stand-out ties.
League leaders Forest Green Rovers, who travel to former members AFC Wimbledon in the cup after seeing off National League South side Margate in the live BT Sport game last Saturday lunchtime, can now concentrate on their efforts to gain promotion.
This weekend sees Ady Pennock’s side host Chester FC at The New Lawn and by the time they kick-off, they could be in second spot as Cheltenham Town play 24 hours earlier live on BT Sport at Blundell Park against fourth-placed Grimsby Town in one of the weekend’s most attractive-looking matches.
Another fascinating encounter sees Tranmere Rovers take on Dover Athletic at Prenton Park on Saturday, and with Gary Brabin’s (pictured) men currently occupying the final play-off spot and Chris Kinnear’s Whites lying third, this should be another cracker.
Kidderminster make a nineteenth attempt to break their duck in the league when they host a Woking side who have won just once in the last seven themselves, while Altrincham against Torquay at Moss Lane is another crucial-looking encounter at the bottom end of the table.
