Writing by Grimsby Town fans which covers three memorable decades of the club's history is brought together for the first time in a stunning new book published by the Mariners Trust.

We are Town: Writing by Grimsby Fans 1970–2002 offers a unique supporter's-eye-view on an extraordinary era beginning with Lawrie McMenemy and Matt Tees, through the George Kerr and
Alan Buckley days, right up to Phil Jevons' incredible last-minute League Cup tie winner at Liverpool.

Edited by Pat Bell and Pete Green of the Town fanzine Cod Almighty, the book is sure to appeal to Mariners fans across the generations – those who were there, and those who wish they had been.

The content While Grimsby now languish in the fifth tier of English football, the club topped the Championship as recently as 2001 – and the timespan covered by We are Town includes two title wins, two double promotions, cup shocks, and the Mariners' first ever visits to Wembley. Managers came and went (and came back again). Players like Clive Mendonca, Ivano Bonetti and Paul Futcher became cult heroes while the long-serving Paul Groves and John McDermott attained the status of legends.

And like the very best football writing, We are Town is not just about events on the pitch but about the wider role of the game. It's about how the fortunes of a football club are intertwined – for better and for worse – with the life story of everyone who cares about it.

By turns nostalgic, bitter, euphoric, argumentative and funny, the book comprises classic fan favourites from publications such as Sing When We're Fishing, Cod Almighty and The Fishy, together
with specially commissioned brand new writing.

We are Town also includes the Great Grimsby XI: the eagerly awaited results of a poll to establish supporters' favourite Mariners player in every position during the timespan covered by the book.
The authors and editors With so much material, it's no surprise that the Mariners have inspired some excellent writing. To name just some of the fans whose work features in We are Town, Bill Brewster and Phil Ball are the authors of several books on music and Spanish football respectively; Steve Bierley is a long-serving sports journalist with the Guardian; and Paul Thundercliffe co-authored the acclaimed Alan Buckley autobiography Pass and Move.

Pat Bell and Pete Green, editors of the independent Grimsby Town fanzine Cod Almighty, wanted to bring some of this material together to celebrate both a great period in the Mariners’ history and the writing it inspired. Compiling the book was a labour of love, unearthing forgotten gems of writing from fanzines and the national press, and commissioning younger authors to write new chapters.
Pete said:"Working on the book has reminded me that, for a smaller club, Town have a lot of fans who are superb writers. Between them they tell a compelling story of the club's rich modern history.

"Some of this writing has never been seen before. Other articles in the book are scattered across fanzines and the far reaches of the web.

"It was really important to us that this material could be brought together in print – to celebrate the club's heritage and create a permanent record of an incredible three decades. Best of all, it's a
hugely entertaining read – insightful, sometimes moving, and often side-splittingly funny."
