The Mariners have landed on a leading site on the board.
THE new MONOPOLY board for Grimsby and Cleethorpes was this morning launched in spectacular style at The National Fishing Heritage Centre - as a gigantic five foot square replica of the board was unfurled.
The official unveiling ceremony saw the unique board revealed in full for the first time at exactly the same time as the game hit shop shelves.
And at the launch the top two locations were named.
They are Grimsby Minster and Grimsby Town FC, which were announced as having landed on the board’s two leading sites, Mayfair and Park Lane respectively. The makers’ stress it’s a Cleethorpes AND Grimsby top set as the footie club reside in Cleethorpes. They form the very top set, with the most expensive MONOPOLY properties sitting at the summit of this unique board.
And civic leaders were queuing up to praise the new board.
The Mayor of North East Lincolnshire, Councillor Cliff Barber said: “I’m sure the board will be popular not just with people who still live here, but with those who have moved on since being born and bred in the area and will bring back fond memories for them.’’
Council leader Ray Oxby agreed. He said: “The launch today of this board is indeed a celebration of Grimsby and Cleethorpes and while everyone who lives here knows the charms of the area, it’s great that the makers of the world’s most famous board game agree with us.
“MONOPOLY is hugely popular and played by millions of people across the world and the fact that the makers have decided we should have our own unique edition to help celebrate the 80th anniversary of the game shows that we’re now really on the map.”
As reported in the media last month, Cleethorpes Beach gets Old Kent Road to “protect and preserve it from any future development” say the makers who point out Old Kent Road offer the poorest returns in the game.
“These three loved locations secured the most votes in a public poll and are on the three most talked about and arguably coveted locations as a reward” says Rob Osborne, MONOPOLY Development Manager at Winning Moves UK, makers of the board under official license from MONOPOLY owners Hasbro.
Two charities get to appear on the board too – a cat rescue centre and St Andrew’s Hospice, whose Jane Whenham-White, Head of Income Generation at the hospice, says:
“We are on cloud nine at being included on the Grimsby and Cleethorpes MONOPOLY and the fact that it was voted for by the public makes it even more special.
“MONOPOLY is a British institution – it’s up there with tea and cricket – and now we can proudly say we have our own spot in the game’s magnificent history.
The board also features around 20 more landmarks including Dudley the Donkey which was an extremely popular choice. It has been rewarded with its’ very own Community Chest card which FINES players caught riding it. Another card is more rewarding and gives out money for Grimsby Town FC scoring a winner in a Cup Final. There are very many other themed Grimsby and Cleethorpes Chance and Community Chest playing cards too.
Grimsby and Cleethorpes MONOPOLY launch day was being described as M Day - MONOPOLY launch day.
Rob Osborne, MONOPOLY Development Manager at Winning Moves UK. “The board is a celebration of Grimsby and Cleethorpes and we would like to thank everyone who has voted for the landmarks that appear and star on it. We are sure it sums up the heritage and spirit of the region past, present and future."
