Vanarama National League Round Up

17 September 2015

Last Saturday saw Forest Green Rovers make it nine wins from nine matches with a 2-1 success against Southport at the New Lawn.

But Ady Pennock’s side came unstuck at the tenth time of asking when goals from John Goddard and Jimmy Keohane sealed a 2-1 win for Woking at Kingfield on Tuesday night.
The Cards’ success came on the back of a 4-4 thriller at Nethermoor against Guiseley AFC last Saturday in which a ding-dong encounter finished all-square, courtesy of a last-gasp Jake Lawlor equaliser for the Lions.

Tuesday’s win lifted Garry Hill’s Woking side up to fourth in the table and they are headed by Gateshead and Cheltenham Town, who both earned second wins of the week on Tuesday. The Tynesiders saw off Wrexham 2-1 at the International Stadium on Tuesday after a fine win at Eastleigh by the same scoreline three days earlier.

Gary Johnson’s Robins earned two successive home wins against Dover Athletic and then Macclesfield Town.

At the opposite end of the table it’s worrying times for Kidderminster Harriers, who re-structured their management team ahead of last Saturday’s 1-1 draw at fellow strugglers FC Halifax Town.
But new head coach Tim Flowers failed to guide Harriers to a first win of the season to date when Torquay United held them to a 2-2 Aggborough draw on Tuesday. And it was only thanks to 92nd minute penalty from Reece Styche that Flowers’ men salvaged a point.

The Shaymen, Southport and Welling United currently occupy the bottom four spots and none of them managed a victory between them this week.

Halifax were beaten 2-1 by Yorkshire neighbours Guiseley AFC on Tuesday, while the Wings followed last Saturday’s 1-1 home draw with Torquay with a 1-0 defeat at Aldershot Town, for whom the much-travelled Richard Brodie scored the only goal at the EBB Stadium.
