OUR Futsal boys have been at it again after they were crowned Football League Trust KinderSport National Futsal Cup Champions.
They arrived at Derby Arena for the Finals on the back of an impressive qualification record. Grimsby had won 4 games from 4 and topped their group during the first qualification round.
To reach the semi-final Grimsby had to finish in the top two of a league of 6 during the second round. In ‘Group A’ Grimsby faced local rivals Scunthorpe, Crewe, Reading, Shrewsbury and Grimsby’s second string B’ team.
Grimsby started off with a 2-0 win over their B’ team, then drew their second game 2-2 with Crewe. In their third group game they comfortably beat Shrewsbury 3-1 before thrashing local rivals Scunthorpe 5-1. With qualification to the semi-finals guaranteed Grimsby ensured they finished top of the group overcoming Reading 6-0.
This set up a tie with the runners up from ‘Group B’ Rochdale United. The game was level at 1-1 for a long period before the Mariners scored two quick fire goals to make it 3-1 and book their place in the final against Norwich.
Town enjoyed large spells of possession in the final as Norwich adopted a half court press tactic. Eventually Hulse found just enough room in Canaries half to fire a shot into the net and give Grimsby the lead. Norwich began to press and were level just a minute later. The Mariners dominated proceedings after this and Blunden gave them a 2-1 edge with 12 minutes to play.
Liam Hulse then stole the show with 2 fantastic solo goals and gain his hatrick to send Town 4-1 up and into comfort mode. Some superb defensive work from Gibbons, Boswell and Taylor ensured Grimsby remained in the ascendancy throughout the remainder of the game. Norwich pulled one back just seconds before the full time buzzer sparked scenes of celebration. Full time Grimsby Town Futsal 4-2 Norwich City. Grimsby had won the National Futsal Cup for the second time in 3 years. A tremendous feat for a non-league club.
