Reserves Suffer Defeat

25 April 2016

AFTER a first half penalty from Harry Clifton gave the Mariners a half-time lead, 2 goals in 8 minutes gave Gateshead a 2-1 victory at Blundell Park in the Final Third Development League.

The young Mariners team enjoyed large periods of possession throughout the game, especially in the first half. Despite having more of the ball, Gateshead saw the first key chance on goal go just wide. Chandler was found unmarked in the penalty area and tried to put the ball back across the path of Warrington but sent it just wide.

In the 35th minute, Town were given a penalty, after Harry Clifton was brought down in the box after intercepting the defenders clearance. Clifton then stepped up and drilled the penalty into the bottom left corner, clipping the post on the way and beating the keeper.

Towards the end of the first half, Gateshead began to increase the pressure, making keeper Andy Warrington pull off a fantastic save. 3 minutes later, Finnegan was in on the action clearing the ball off the line denying the equaliser.

Gateshead were level 9 minutes after the restart, after a great ball delivered into the box from Ashton was fired home with a volley beyond Warrington who could do nothing about it. 2 minutes later, they looked to take the lead with Elliott attempting to lift the ball over Warrington, but the keeper read the striker.

The comeback was complete in the 62nd minute. Despite a great save from Andy Warrington diving to his left, the supporting Gateshead striker was lurking to tap the ball in from close range.

Town were then denied by the woodwork which would have brought the scores level. The introduction of Fawcett troubled the Gateshead back line, with a number of dangerous runs being made. In the 77th minute, Fawcett beat his man and shot towards goal which was saved and into the path of Sibbick, who's side-footed strike crashed into the bar.

The score finished 2-1 to Gateshead.

The reserves will next play away at Rotherham on Wednesday 27th April, with a 2pm kick off.

GTFC Starting XI: Warrington, Lawis, Crowther, Hough, Finnegan, Sibbick, Venney, Clifton, Jennings, Sawyer, Lofts.
