Vanarama National League Round Up

29 January 2016

This week the lead at the top of the Vanarama National League table has changed hands three times, with Forest Green Rovers taking over top spot last Saturday after edging out Braintree Town 1-0 at the New Lawn.

But neighbours Cheltenham Town re-took the summit 24 hours later when they won 2-1 at Crabble against play-off chasing Dover Athletic in front of the BT Sport cameras, who witnessed a thrilling finish.

However, Tuesday night saw Ady Pennock’s men return to the top after winning 1-0 at in-form Southport, while the Robins were being ousted from the FA Trophy by National League South side Oxford City.

It looks as though the two Gloucestershire rivals will be nip and tuck for the remainder of the season.

The top two possess an 8-point lead over third-placed Grimsby Town, who inflicted a 5-0 hammering on struggling Altrincham at the weekend. However, Altrincham recovered well from
that heavy defeat to beat another play-off contender, Woking, on Tuesday night.

Eastleigh are fourth but could only manage a point from a 1-1 draw at fourth-bottom Boreham Wood last Saturday, courtesy of a last-gasp Andy Drury effort.

Kidderminster Harriers now look like needing snookers to avoid the drop after a 1-0 defeat at Aggborough against Guiseley AFC left them 15 points adrift of the safety-mark.

It was also a bad weekend for fellow strugglers Torquay United, beaten 2-0 at home by Gateshead, and Welling United, for whom the 2-1 home defeat by Barrow AFC proved to be Louis Fazakerley’s last in charge of the Wings.

January is seen out with the bottom four all facing away trips, with Welling’s new boss Dean Frost’s first game in charge being at fifth-bottom FC Halifax Town and Boreham Wood facing the long trek north to take on Southport, while Torquay go to a Tranmere Rovers side looking to make it three wins on the spin.
