Disorder In Cleethorpes - Club Statement

25 July 2016

GRIMSBY Town Football Club is very disappointed and saddened by the disorder in Cleethorpes Town centre on Saturday.

The people who involve themselves in this type of disorder are found in all walks of life and often attach themselves to football to pursue  mindless hooliganism.

The club impresses on the police and drinking establishments to work even closer together to stamp out  this unwanted behaviour.

For many years the Club and police have worked together making tremendous strides in controlling disorder, which sadly at the weekend failed miserably.

The game itself went without incident at Blundell Park or within its curtilage.

Sheffield United fans that travelled  on coaches arrived  direct at the ground from 1.30 onwards, 5 in total. Travelling by coach is the most common form of transport used by away fans and this went without hitch as usual.

The troubles emanated from a section of mindless thugs amongst the 500 that travelled by train arriving at Cleethorpes from 10am onwards.

It's not clear if the trains were dry (non alcoholic) but they should have been.

It's disappointing that they were allowed to access Cleethorpes Town Centre so early and more so that drinking establishments allowed them to fuel up.

There are lessons of old and some new ones to be learnt.

Intelligence needs to improve between the Police and the British Transport Police to understand who's travelling and controlling the time of arrival.

The Club does engage in very early consultation with opposing clubs and the police to assess the likely form of travel, how many are travelling and what are the plans for containment and that has meant on occasions, coaches have been turned back where risk has been clearly identified.

The police do have powers under (Section 35) to disburse those clearly intent on causing disorder. This too applies to anyone on banning orders.

It is unclear why these powers weren't used at the first sign of trouble, however during the subsequent days and debrief period, this will become clear.

Grimsby Town Football Club is firmly committed to the assistance in identifying all involved in the shambolic incidents on Saturday and rely on the court system to apply the appropriate punishment to those involved. Clearly there is no room in the family game of football for these people that use football as an excuse for their disorder fix. Let's work together to stamp this out once and for all.
