We've Met Before - Bolton Wanderers

17 October 2016

THE Mariners have never beaten our FA Cup opponents Bolton Wanderers in the competition.

Our first ever League Cup meeting with the Trotters was in 1960, when the Mariners crashed to a 6-2 defeat. Ron Rafferty got both of Town's goals that day.

Our first FA Cup meeting with them was in 1897.  We drew 0-0 at Blundell Park, 3-3 at Burnden Park, before they dumped Town out of the competition 3-2 at a neutral venue. And that was just round one.

The last time the two sides met was in 2000 at Blundell Park. Goals from Bo Hansen and Eidur Gudjohnsen were enough to seal their victory that day. Wanderers eventually made it to the semi final at Wembley Stadium, before losing out to Aston Villa in a penalty shoot-out.

We have played The Trotters 16 times since May 1983 without winning once!

Between 1972 and 1983, we played them 9 times, being undefeated in 8 of those!
