Grimsby Town Football Club are pleased to announce that youngster, Max Wright has signed a new one-year-deal with the club and will join Scarborough Athletic on loan until the end of the season.
Wright says he’s looking forward to continuing his progress at Blundell Park, following signing a new one-year deal with the Mariners this afternoon.
The 19-year-old will go to Scarborough Athletic on a season-long youth loan and is delighted to earn a new Town contract following a successful trial period at the club.
Speaking exclusively on iFollow Mariners, he said: “Unbelievable. I’ve worked hard in the past six weeks in my trial and I’ve impressed him [Town manager Russell Slade] enough and pleased to be a part of the squad now.
“There was a six-week trial, it was extended a little bit because they wanted to have another look at me, but it’s just amazing to be here staying.
“It’s been really tough, but I’ve pushed through it and it’s gone well.
“He said to me that he wants to see some hard work and that he wants to see someone who really wants it and it means to them.
“I think I just showed him hard work and I wanted it a lot so I tried very hard and I stayed out on the training pitch long after the sessions and I hope he was impressed with that.
“I was under-nines when I joined, I’ve been in the system the whole way through. I’ve had a lot of managers since then, but being at Grimsby Town the whole time is all you want to do.
“The fans obviously show a lot of love to me and Harry [Clifton] because obviously we’re home-grown. The fans are great with us.
“When I was a Grimsby Town fan, I always liked rooting for the youngsters coming up – the young lads who have been in the system a long time.
“I prefer the wing, but I don’t mind playing at the back because he likes sending me at right-back or left-back so I’m quite versatile, I don’t mind really.”
And Wright, who is now going into his second year as a professional Town player, praised the Mariners’ new acquisitions.
“Very good, we’ve definitely improved the squad from last year.
“There’s some good new additions, Mitch [Rose] is a strong midfielder, we’ve got some good wingers, some more good defenders – Clarkey [Nathan Clarke] is a new addition, quality.
“We look good. We were unfortunate at the weekend, we just need to pick it up and we’ll be fine for the season,” he said.
And he’s now looking ahead to his loan spell with the Seadogs.
“I’m going out on loan for a bit at Scarborough. Hopefully, if I do well there, I can get called back in, I can get some appearances for the first-team squad and then if that goes well I can push on from there, hopefully try and be a regular starter.
“But hopefully if I go there I can do what I did last year and impress their manager and hopefully score some goals and get them up the table.
“I’ve been keeping a close eye on what they’ve been up to, Scarborough. They’re doing well so far. There’s a few players I know there – Michael Coulson, ex-Town.”
