Town boss Russell Slade believes the 2-0 defeat to Luton Town was a good benchmark for his side and doesn't think the Mariners were a million miles away from their top of the table opponents.
Speaking after the game, he said: ''Certainly in the opening 20 mintues, they created a real tempo and tried to drag us back to create a bit of space for that diamond shape they play but I think we'd almost got through that period to be honest and it was when Zak went bombing forward and had an opportunity to score that they broke from there.
''We've not kept a nice balance and they've hurt us from that situation and we've not closed off Berry, which has resulted in the opening goal and that is always gonna be important at Luton Town.
''With the second goal, Ben (Davies) should've dealt with it and should've played the ball forward or we should've belted it at the player and got a throw but we didn't and we pakid dearly for that.
''They're an honest lot, there's a great spirit in there and he's held his hands up. When the ball fizzes across and isn't cleared, it's gonna be a goal and we've not dealt with that.
''What I did feel was that after half time we were the better side and had an excellent spell, with them scoring against the run of play, which was disappointing.
On the difference between the sides
''Listen, they've got a good squad, they've invested heavily in a big squad there.
''They've had time, which is just as important to develop what they do whereas we're still in transition but are progressing and getting better without a doubt.
''We played the best side today and I don't think we were a million miles behind them.
On what he takes from the game
''Just to learn and that it's a fine line. Two little misjudgements have cost us today.
''Macca's made his first save in the 87th minute and not that many teams can come here and say that.
''That's the only one that was on target other than the two they scored from that we haven't got near, but that' was the only save.''
On how the team will manage the Christmas period
''We're working and there's not a lot of time off.
''Even when they're getting that time off, it's about using it to recover.
''Recovering is just important now as preparation for the next game and we'll do that as best we can.''
