TOWN boss Russell Slade says his side deserved to be beaten in the 3-0 defeat to Accrington Stanley and he wants his players to respond once again when they head to Crewe Alexandra on New Year’s Day.
Speaking after the game, the Town boss said: ‘’Accrington were the better side, they were a bit better than us in the first period and second period they got the first goal and when they come they come thick and fast.
‘’The first goal is important and they got that. I thought it was soft penalty in fairness but they deserved their win second half we weren’t at our normal level or our level over the last four or five weeks.
‘’I actually thought we started the first five minutes of the second half okay. We looked to have a bit of control but it’s those decisions or those moments where you can’t switch off and we’ve not dealt with a defensive situation quick enough to stop them.
‘’When we have been close enough, the referee decides a penalty. It looks very soft but sometimes they’re given these days. I don’t know why because it’s a contact sport and there’s very little contact if any there.’’
On not responding after the first goal
‘’We’ve done that well over the season but that’s the first time really since Mansfield and Stevenage where we’ve gone a goal down and gone a second goal down too quickly so we didn’t give ourselves a chance to respond.
‘’Maybe I should’ve made a few more changes today and maybe that was an issue but I don’t think we should be looking at excuses.
‘’They didn’t make many changes and the better team won today we have to take that one on the chin and respond from that.
On the goalkeeper situation following news about McKeown
‘’It’s difficult at this stage but it is a length of time for sure.
‘’He’s not gonna be back next week or the week after so again that’s another situation we’ll have to look at.
‘’What we’ll do is look at the situation in a calm way and make the right decisions as we go along.’’
On having confidence in his players
‘’Of course we have confidence. It was a difficult period of games where won three on the bounce then we’ve gone to Notts County and put in a really strong performance before going to Luton and being competitive despite losing to a very good Luton side.
‘’I thought we were a bit unfortunate not to get the win against Mansfield and today we didn’t deserve everything but they’re four tough fixtures.
‘’It’s about consistency and trying to get back on track because we’re good enough and capable enough of getting back on track.’’
