Bignot Apologises To Fans

11 February 2017

Town boss Marcus Bignot felt that it was right to go across and apologise to the Town fans after today's 5-0 drubbing at Crewe Alexandra.

Speaking after the game, he said: "There was a lot of frustration from the supporters, it needed me to go over.

"I needed to go over to thank our supporters at the end. We are very appreciative and I have always had a relationship – whether playing or managing – with the supporters.

"They've paid their hard earned money and worked all week - travelled across to Crewe for an absolutely disappointing result.

"One or two missed me going over initially to thank the supporters, so I just made sure that was the case again.

"They have every right to vent their frustrations, I respect that."

Bignot also believes that the Mariners were just blown away on the day and that they need to manage game better in the future.

He said: ''I just think we got blown away. You look at goals, there was a goal after two minutes and then you're just looking to make sure you just stay in the game and recover and before you know it, there's three goals in 15 minutes and then it's game over, isn't it?

''I was contemplating making a change when they got the second goal and then while you're considering it, there were three goals in ten minutes.

''They got belief and got confidence from that but we should've managed that period better.

Bignot is now eager for his side to respond, and they will have a quick chance to do that when they make the trip to Newport County on Tuesday night.

''I could go in there and give them the hair dryer treatement but the damage has already been done,'' said the Town boss.

''They'll be hurting in there, like me and like the supporters so we just can't wait for Tuesday now.

''I'm really greatful there's a  game in mdiweek so we can bounce back and put the wrongs right but for me, we don't become a bad side overnight so I'll never get too carriedd away.

''When we win a game and when we go toe-to-toe with Luton and compete with Luton who are in the play-offs and are expecting to go up, I won't get too carried away with that and I know I can't because it's more than just a defeat today. We've taking a hammering.''

Asked if he would be considering changes to both his team and his system after the defeat, Bignot said: '''It's important we don't just react and take time now to watch the game back.

''Sometimes its players, its systems and last week we're a good team so I can't manage like that.

''You can't expect players to build confidence and belief if you're gonna manage with emotion so it now takes cool heads to go back to the training ground.

''We'll look into everything from the team we picked, to the shape we picked, the preparation, what time we got here - everything.

''We want a reaction. We're still only 6 points away from the play-offs but that's how crazy this league is.

''But if we are gonna do it, we have to manage games better and like I said, three goals in ten minutes is the sort of thing that happens once in a blue moon.

''We've gotta put it down to that and it can't happen again.''
