Grimsby Town U18s 0-1 Mansfield Town U18s
Blundell Park was the location for the U18s on Friday night for an FA Youth Cup first round tie against Mansfield Town.
Town had lost to their counterparts 3-2 earlier this season, but this turned out to be a much tighter affair.
The first half was a mainly fought out in midfield with both sides creating very few chances, and the midfield battle was evenly split as the teams headed into the break scoreless.
The second period, however, was more open with both sides coming close on a few occasions. Brandon Buckley started the second half on the front foot narrowly striking wide, Rumarn Burrell and Josh Walker were constantly a threat to The Stags’ defence.
But the visitors capitalised on a good spell of possession when Sam Jackson's stunning strike from 25 yards flew into the top corner of the goal.
And The Stags went close again soon after with a header which came back off the crossbar.
From then on it was all Town with some excellent free flowing football, carving open the Mansfield defence.
Ollie Saunders' 80th minute strike rattled the crossbar, and Neil Woods' side were denied a penalty when a Town player looked to be upended in the box.
The Mariners continued to dominate but couldn't find a way through a resolute Stag's defence.
Neil Woods' side are next in action on Saturday when Chesterfield are the visitors to Cheapside (11am).
