Speaking after tonight’s game, the Town gaffer said: “The facts are that we’ve made 11 changes, that is because I have belief in the whole group. Also, for one reason or another, there were players who needed competitive minutes on the pitch as well."

His thoughts on the game.

“There was some good things. It was a competitive game which is exactly what we wanted," he said. To be fair to Sunderland, they came and played with a real intensity in the game.

“It was a very even first half. There was a few chances at both ends. I thought that in the second half we grew stronger and started creating a little bit more.

“We got the penalty, got our noses in front, but we should have managed it little bit better. It looked like we were going for the second goal - which we nearly got. From there they broke on us managed to get a deflection off Macca and into the goal, to make it all-square.

“Eventually it’s gone to penalties, as you know, and we’ve lost seven-six.

“There were some good performances, Karleigh Osbourne was outstanding at the back, there was 70 minutes for Jamey Osborne, which was good. He’s feeling it a little bit, he’s a bit tight in his calves, but that understandable because he hasn’t had an awful lot of football. There was vital minutes for our young players too.”
