The young mariners faced local rivals, Lincoln City U18’s in their penultimate Youth Alliance Cup fixture at Cheapside this morning.

Neil Woods’ men started the game brightly, dominating possession and creating a number of chances through the lively Ty-Rhys Paul-Jones and Jamie Goddard. Lincoln were effective on the counter-attack but the Mariners defence nullified any real chances of note.

The Imps started the second half on the front foot and had the better of the early exchanges, without creating any real clear cut goal scoring opportunities. As the second half wore on the Mariners began to get a foothold in the period with some excellent attacking football, however against the run of play the visitors took the lead with a 25-yard strike on the 60th minute (0-1).

Town responded well to going a goal down and created a number of chances through Brandon Buckley, Josh Walker, and Rumarn Burrell and it was Burrell who got the Mariner’s back on level terms on the 84th minute after a neat interchange of play, full back Alex McMillan broke into the box and crossed for Burrell to guide home (1-1).

Pushing for a winner, the Mariners took all 3 points after a stoppage time free kick from substitute Kyle Richardson fell to defender Mattie Pollock who finished from close range.

PDP Coach, Callum Lester commented, "It was a great team performance, every player played there part in the victory. We looked very bright with the ball, and created enough chances to win two games in the end. Fair play to Lincoln, they had a game plan and had spells of pressure, but I felt we dealt with the threats very well."
