Town boss Michael Jolley says that the club are going to appeal Wes Thomas’ late red card at Newport this afternoon.
Speaking to the press after the game, Jolley said: “I think we will definitely appeal that one because the ball’s come forward to Wes, he’s raised his foot to control the ball – I think he has controlled the ball. He possibly didn’t know that the player was coming in because he was on his blind side – all the more reason why it is very strange to receive a red card for that. Going into the 90 minutes and the extra time, we felt that with two strikers up there we could still create something. As soon as Wes goes off, that kills the game.”
But the Town boss admitted that Newport were the better side on the day and deserved to win the game.
“Jolley said: “I think we were second best in the game, Newport deserved to win. The first half, I thought they were first to everything, played with an energy and intensity. I think we were off it in the first half.
“I think we responded in the second half and we tried to get back in the game. Even right up until the last few minutes we thought that we had a chance of creating some positive situations – then the referee decides to send off one of our players for controlling the ball.
“Overall, I can’t say that we deserved too much out of the game today because I think it was a performance that was below the previous performances that we have give.”
