Town Sign Championship Goalkeeper On Loan

5 January 2018

Grimsby Town Football Club are pleased to announce the signing of Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper, Jake Kean on loan until the end of the season.

The 26-year-old towering shot-stopper joins the ranks alongside Ben Killip and James McKeown, who is currently side-lined due to an injury sustained in our 1-1 draw vs. Mansfield Town on Boxing Day.

Kean began his youth career at Derby County, where he spent 3 years before signing for Blackburn Rovers towards the end of the 2008/09 season. In 6 years with the club, Kean made 44 appearances for Rovers including one Premier League appearance against Chelsea in 2012. In his time at Rovers, Kean enjoyed loan spells at Hartlepool United, Rochdale, Yeovil Town and Oldham Athletic respectively.

Following his release from Blackburn in 2015, Jake signed a two-year-deal for then Premier League side, Norwich City before making loan moves to Colchester United & Swindon Town in his first season.

After spending a year at The Canaries, Kean made the move to Sheffield Wednesday in 2016, joining League Two rivals Mansfield Town on loan for the second half of the 2016/17 season, making 19 league appearances for The Stags.

Speaking exclusively to gtfc.co.uk, Kean said "I'm really excited about the move. I'm excited about getting out on the pitch and getting some game time, you work hard Monday to Friday and to have something to look forward to on the Saturday and I'm definitely not turning down the chance to get out and play some games".

Kean has spoken to Russell and the management team, who gave him an insight into the club. "I had a chat with the gaffer for about half an hour before we agreed the move and he explained the way he works and the way he wants his teams to work", said Kean. "We had a good chat about his back room staff and it sounds like a fantastic set up, there really was nothing negative to come out of the conversation we had!"

Jake will be eligible for selection for tomorrow's visit of Morecambe subject to Football League approval and will wear the number 33 shirt.
