Match Report: Forest Green Rovers 0-3 Grimsby Town

Town wrap up the season in style at The New Lawn.

5 May 2018

Grimsby Town stretched their Sky Bet League Two unbeaten streak to five games as JJ Hooper scored both goals in a 3-0 win over Forest Green Rovers at The New Lawn.

Town opened the scoring on 52 minutes through Hooper, who tapped it home among a goal-line scramble following Fox’s free-kick from the right.

Hooper got his brace on 84 minutes with a brilliant side-footed effort to the top-right corner.

And he sealed his hat-trick with a sublime 25-yard strike to make it 3-0 to the Mariners.

Town started brightly and earned the first chance of the game on five minutes as Rose broke through the home side’s defence before his shot deflected off Gunning and into the side-netting.

But the match had become scrappy in the middle shortly after with neither side able to make it stick or really having a clear-cut opportunity to open the scoring.

And referee Seb Stockbridge gave the first booking of the game on 19 minutes as former Town man Gunning was shown the yellow for a foul on Cardwell.

And it was another 10 minutes before the next half-chance was created as Summerfield and Cardwell produced neat play to break into the home side’s box, but the latter saw his weak effort drift wide of the mark.

But Forest Green began to create more chances as the half wore on, and came the closest to opening the scoring on several occasions.

The home side had a chance to go ahead on 31 minutes as Doidge connected to Brown’s in-swinging corner from the left, but his powerful header flew well wide of McKeown’s right-post.

But Doidge did call the Town ‘keeper into action four minutes later as he looked to have rounded him in a one-on-one situation, but McKeown somehow managed to claw the ball away from the Forest Green striker’s feet, and keep the scores level.

And Mark Cooper’s men came close again on 39 minutes as Cooper’s side-footed effort deflected off Clarke before slowly trickling past the post and out for a corner. But the home side failed to make the set piece count as McKeown caught the cross with ease.

And Forest Green came close again on 42 minutes when Laird’s free-kick seemed to be on-course to nestling into the top-right corner, but McKeown made a brilliant leaping save to catch it and deny the hosts of an opener.

Half-time: Forest Green Rovers 0-0 Grimsby Town

But the Mariners broke the deadlock seven minutes into the second period after Fox’s free-kick was flicked down by Rose into the path of Hooper, who bundled it over the line to make it 1-0 to Town.

But the home side came close to equalising through Doidge on 58 minutes, but the striker’s close-ranged shot was denied by an instinctive stop by McKeown.

Forest Green made a double-change on the hour-mark as Bray and Grubb replaced Osbourne and Brown.

And Town made their first sub of the game three minutes later as Davies came on for Hall-Johnson at right-back.

Town defended resolutely and managed the game well to restrict the home side to few opportunities to get back into the game.

Town received their first booking of the game on 67 minutes as Fox was shown the yellow for a foul on Reid.

And the home side made their final change on 71 minutes as Campbell replaced Reid.

Jolley made another change with 12 minutes to go as he brought on Matt to replace Cardwell.

And Hooper got his second with six minutes remaining with a great bit of skill to beat the Forest Green defence, before letting loose with a brilliant side-footed strike to the top-right corner!

The Mariners made their final change of the game with three minutes to go as Berrett replaced Rose.

And Hooper sealed his hat-trick with a sublime effort from 25 yards to find the top-right corner and make it 3-0.
