A perfect night!
A great GTFC team, the famous Kevin Keegan as Fulham Manager, the iconic Peschisolido leading the line for the Cottagers, a tie tensely balanced at start of play 1-1, and the best backing cast - the fans - possibly ever seen at Blundell Park.
From the kick-off, the Town fans created an atmosphere rarely seen before - something special was about to unfold. Tackles were flying in, Dave Smith - the hero of the first leg - almost scored an own goal, Lever had two headers on the Fulham goal saved by Taylor in the Fulham goal, and the Peschisolido caught the classy Peter Handyside late after he had made a clearance, and for the second time in the two-gale tie, Fulham were reduced to 10 men. In the second half, Lester twice bore down on the Fulham goal but was thwarted by point blank saves by Taylor. Livvo replaced Gally with 16 minutes left, and seven minutes later played a decisive part in the all-important goal. Burnett played the ball forward to Livvo, but the quick-thinking striker allowed it to run on to Donovan who was left with a one-on-one with the keeper, and as he almost always did, he won the battle of minds, to put Town 1 up and on the road to Wembley, again!
Nothing could compare!
