Whitmore Becomes First Summer Signing

30 May 2018

Grimsby Town Football Club are pleased to announce the signing of Defender, Alex Whitmore from Chesterfield on an initial one-year-deal.

The 22-year-old began his career at Burnley, joining the club at 16 as a scholar. In the 2013/14 season, Whitmore signed his first professional contract with the club making the transition into the first team squad in the pre-season of 2015.

Alex enjoyed a number of loan spells during his spell at Burnley, making his professional debut in November 2015 whilst on loan at Chester FC in the National League during a 1-1 draw vs. Dover Athletic. The following January, Whitmore made the move to Gateshead on loan where he secured a regular spot in the starting line-up, making 23 appearances for The Heed scoring twice.

After signing a contract extension with Burnley in the summer of 2016, he made the move to fellow Sky Bet League Two side, Morecambe on loan. Alex made his debut for The Shrimps at Blundell Park vs. The Mariners in our opening day 2-0 victory. Despite still being under-21, Whitmore went on to make 43 appearances across two loan spells with Morecambe, proving to be a pivotal player in their 16/17 campaign.

In January 2018, Whitmore departed Burnley signing a two-and-a-half year deal with Chesterfield, going on to make 15 appearances and scoring one goal, as The Spireites failed to maintain their Football League status.

Alex worked previously with Manager, Michael Jolley, who has spoken exclusively to gtfc.co.uk about his first summer recruit. "Alex is someone I know and trust from our previous time working together", said Jolley.

"He is a very committed player who will give 100% every time he plays. He is still very young and I believe he will develop further and grow with us during his time at Grimsby Town. Last season, Alex was with a club who were relegated and I know he is determined to prove he can do well in this league. Knowing Alex as I do, I certainly believe that he can be an important player for us moving forward".

Speaking exclusively to gtfc.co.uk, Alex spoke in glowing terms regarding his Manager. "He's a fantastic manager", said Whitmore. "He's a fantastic gentleman, he's one of the good ones and one of the most knowledgable football men I have ever met in my life and he deserves what he got at the end of last season".

"His knowledge of every position is unbelievable, he knows what is required from each player, he knew what I needed to do to become a better centre-half and taught me tactical things that I don't think i'd have learned from other people and i'm forever grateful for that".
