Grimsby Town youth team continued their unbeaten start to the EFL North East Youth Alliance campaign as they drew 2-2 with Rotherham United at Roundwood.
Neil Woods’ side twice came from behind, but dominated the play and should have claimed all three points.
The Millers opened the scoring via a counter-attack on four minutes as their winger sent in a cross from the left for their striker to convert into the bottom-right corner.
Town came close to drawing level through two Mattie Pollock headers, but the centre-half couldn’t quite direct them towards goal.
But midfielder Kyle Richardson equalised for Town a minute before the break as he beat the goalkeeper with a wonderful effort from the edge of the area to make it 1-1.
Woods made one change at the break as Joe Starbuck replaced Ayodeji Owoeye.
But the home side once again took an early lead in the second half as a winger’s cross ricocheted off Town defender Pollock for an own goal.
It only took the Mariners three minutes to equalise, though, as substitute Starbuck connected to Tom Jamieson’s cross, and smashed it into the top-corner with a powerful strike to make it 2-2.
And Starbuck almost grabbed his brace on 72 minutes, but his left-footed volley from the edge of the area was cleared off the line as the Millers hung on for a point.
The Mariners host Mansfield Town in the league at Cheapside next Saturday.
