🎞️ Freeview | Charles Vernam: 'It's An Audition'

Grimsby Town forward Charles Vernam says he's viewing the Mariners' remaining Sky Bet League Two games an "audition"

Grimsby Town striker Charles Vernam says he’s using the final four Sky Bet League Two games of the season as an “audition” for next year.

The 22-year-old has impressed as a starter in Town’s last two games, and scored the equaliser in the 1-1 draw with Morecambe last weekend.

And Vernam hopes he can build some momentum, ready to kick on in his second season at Blundell Park next term.

Speaking exclusively on iFollow Mariners, he said: “It was a really nice feeling. It’s been a while since I’ve scored, so it was a really nice feeling to get a goal – especially in those circumstances as well.

“We’ve not scored in a while so it was really nice, and a good feeling, and I was happy to be able to help the team.

“I’m really enjoying it. It had been a while since I started a game before this run.

“And I’m trying to use these last four games as a real audition going into next season to try and create something for myself, and create a platform to build on going into next season.

“It’s my first real full season in English football and I’ve been happy with how it’s gone, but it’s about building a platform to go into next season and really try and kick on.”

And Vernam, who joined Town on a two-year deal from Derby County last summer, hailed the importance of the support of the black and white army in the stands on a match-day.

He said: “The fans have been brilliant with me. They’ve welcomed me back, and it’s been great to be around.

“And I think you can see in the celebrations that I’m grateful to them for the journeys they make to come watch us.

“I think it’s important that we give back to them in our performances, and how we try and represent the club, because they’re a massive part of the club.

“It’s a great feeling. We’ve got great fans, and they do really kick us on. We took almost 300 to Morecambe and they were unbelievable.

“And it was great how many we took to Crystal Palace, and there is a massive fan base at this club, and we want to do well for them.”

Vernam has scored several times at the Colchester Community Stadium, including his first professional EFL goal in Town’s 1-1 draw with Colchester United last season.

And he hopes he can find the back of the net there again in Good Friday’s clash with the U’s (3pm).

He said: “I scored there when I was at the academy in Derby for the under-23s so it’s a ground which has had happy memories for me in the past, so hopefully I can go back there and score again.

“It’s a nice feeling – I think every player has these places where they go to and they’ve always either scored there or done well.

“So it is a nice feeling and hopefully I can build on my goal from the weekend!”
