Grimsby Town manager Michael Jolley was left delighted as Elliott Whitehouse scored on his Mariners debut in the 2-0 Sky Bet League Two win over Morecambe.
The 25-year-old midfielder opened the scoring on 68 minutes, after more than a year out through his ruptured ACL injury – before youth academy graduate Max Wright scored his first goal for the club in added-time at the Globe Arena.
And Town boss Jolley expressed his happiness that midfielder Whitehouse completed his injury comeback with a goal on his debut.
Speaking on iFollow Mariners, he said: “It was a typical League Two game – it was tense, it was quite frenetic for the first hour or so.
“I think whoever was going to get the first goal would have an advantage, and we’re really pleased that was us.
“And I thought we managed the game, and saw it out, really well, so it was certainly a good start for us.
“We’re obviously a larger team this year than we were last year – we’ve deliberately tried to create that situation, and I think we looked a threat on some of the situations we had.
“They tried to come out and catch us offside, but that wasn’t given, and we’ll certainly take it.
“Ludvig Öhman controlled it and squared it, so credit to him for being calm in the box.
“I’m just delighted for Elliott Whitehouse. His first game for 12 months, and I was really pleased for him to get the opening goal.
“He was somebody I put a lot of effort into bringing to Grimsby Town because I really believe in him as a player.
“And when he got the injury we were all devastated for him, so to see him back in the team and playing well – I’m really pleased about it.”
Jolley also praised Max Wright as the substitute secured all three points for his side with a 96th-minute goal against the Shrimps.
He said: “Maxy came on and gave us good energy, and we know what he’s all about.
“We know that he can help us this year with his quality and his attacking play, so for him to get a goal, we’re delighted!”
