Grimsby Town manager Michael Jolley praised his team’s performance as they progressed to round two of the Carabao Cup.
Jordan Cook’s 40th-minute goal separated the two sides as the Mariners beat Sky Bet League One outfit Doncaster Rovers at Blundell Park.
And Jolley was impressed with his team’s performance as they set up a round two tie at home to Macclesfield Town (week commencing August 26).
Speaking on iFollow Mariners, he said: “It’s always a difficult balance to strike between not completely changing everything, and losing the momentum.
“But also we want to respect the game and get a result, and we did that.
“Doncaster are a good side – they played some good football, and created chances first half, but we’re really pleased with the outcome.
“They’re a good possession-based side, and they had a lot of the ball. We made a small tactical change in the first half, and I think that helped us.
“And obviously the goal gave us more confidence so credit to the players for that.
“It was a really good goal and we do a lot of work on counter-attacking.
“It was a good break from Jordan Cook and a good pass to Moses Ogbu, and I thought the weight, and the timing, of his pass was excellent.
“And it was a great finish, and I’m really pleased for Jordan because he’s got goals in him and he just needs the chance to play.”
