Our Youth Team were back in league action at the weekend after a month’s lay-off.
Town travelled to Mansfield Town who had already recorded three victories over the Mariners this season in various competitions.
It was the stags who started the brighter too, forcing Battersby into a number of saves in the opening exchanges.
Town got a foothold in the game midway through the first half and started to have meaningful possession, with McPherson going the closest on the half-hour mark.
Deadlock at half time in a competitive first half.
Mansfield started the brighter again in the second half forcing Battersby into a number of routine saves.
And it was the home side who opened the scoring on the hour when they tapped in from close range following a cross.
Town responded well and got the equaliser when Starbuck burst down the right only to be fouled in the box, before Richardson stepped up to dispatch from the spot to make it 1-1 in the 70th minute.
The game became a real end to end contest when Buckley smashed an unstoppable shot against the post, but the Stags immediately went down the other end to win a penalty. However a fine save from Battersby kept the scores all level at 1-1.
But it was the Mariners who were going to come home with the three points, when, in the 82nd minute, Buckley escaped his marker on the edge of the box before firing home from distance with the ball nestling in the bottom corner.
An evenly contested game by both sides in which Town run out 2-1 winners.
